“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.”
Zechariah 4:10
The bigger the better. It’s all or nothing. These are phrases that are meant to motivate. But sometimes they can cause discouragement as well.
When Zerubbabel was given the responsibility of rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem, it was not going to be as grand as the one Solomon built, but he had the vision, determination, and the Lord’s Armies to help him complete the job.
David turned down the royal armor to use a sling and a stone (I Samuel 17: 32-51). Jael used a jug of milk and a tent peg (Judges 4:21). Jesus used a small boy’s lunch (John 6:9-11).
We sometimes back down on our dreams or assignments because we don’t have what we think we need or we worry about it not being good enough. But friend, if God has called you to do something, He will make it happen (I Thessalonians 5:24). All it takes is a little bit of faith – even as small as a mustard seed – and a steadfast obedience to get the job done.
You won’t need the best equipment or the most fancy tools. You won’t need celebrity status. All you’ll need is to hang on to the One who calls you.
Our work is not measured by human standards, nor is it measured by the best or the worst. Our work is empowered by the Spirit which has no measure. So bigger is not always better and all can be accomplished with nothing because God can take the smallest of things and make them great for His Kingdom. And He rejoices just to see the work begin, and we should rejoice too!
So don’t worry about how insignificant you might feel. Or having the biggest and best equipment. Don’t think that you can’t make a difference without a little more knowledge or money. Or that what you are doing is not good enough. If God is for you, who can be against you? If you’ve been prompted to do something, give it to the Lord and let Him do what He does best.
“It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”
Zechariah 4:6
