I have to want to change more than I want to stay the same. This goes through my mind constantly with all the things in my life that need improvement! But it’s so easy to rationalize why what’s familiar is ok and so hard to get moving out of my comfort zone to make that change happen.
And it’s hard to understand sometimes what propels me to want to remain unhappy when the hope and blessings of change are so inviting.
So often, we can’t even fathom what change can bring. In fact, we may not even realize the misery we can leave behind. The hope of knowing that there might be something better can get distorted because of our limited understanding of what’s outside our familiar box.
I remember when I gave up gambling. The casinos, the scratch offs, the deceptive high, and being the Queen of Hearts was so familiar. Yet there was an underlying uneasiness that burdened my heart. As hard as I tried and as many times that I asked the Lord to help me, I was always drawn back to it simply because I couldn’t imagine new spaces.
Once I finally committed it to God, doors were opened that I had been waiting for, and a few that weren’t even on my radar. Yes, scrubbing toilets was not quite what I had in mind when I had applied to volunteer at the women’s shelter, but when the phone call came just two days after I gave up gambling, I knew it was God making a way for me to stay on course with my commitment to change. Through that, and two other life changing doors He opened that very week, I am still reaping the blessings of relationship, purpose and peace.
God assures us that when we call on him and let him help, He will show us unsearchable and unimaginable things. Some of these are tangible. Some of them are celestial. But all of them are better and more enduring than the things that keep us in our familiar but uneasy space.
Change is hard. I’m not gonna lie. But staying the same can be just as hard in the long run. I pray today that you are able to let God’s mercy lead you in faith to a place that is desirably better that anything you’ve ever even dreamed of. It may be a small daily routine, or a huge lifestyle change, but when you call on God to help, He will answer in unimaginable ways! His box is so much bigger than ours!
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know”.
