“O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!”
Psalms 139:1-6
Do you ever think that you have to do something significant to feel like you matter? There seems to be a stigma in this world that creates false value based on do more, say more, or push yourself harder to be more. Not that visions and dreams are bad things; they are definitely important for accomplishing good goals. But basing your significance or worth on standards of what everyone else thinks of you, sees in you, or expects of you, negates the work of Jesus in you.
The Good News is that there is no shame in being who you are, right where you are, and being content with that. Don’t get me wrong here – there’s always room to grow with Jesus and be more like him. But if we are more concerned about pleasing everyone else and meeting their expectations, we lose sight of Who we really need to please. And when we are striving to please the right Person, we can peacefully and joyfully embrace the wonders of our uniqueness and find our significance in living for an audience of One.
It is truly too great to understand how such imperfect, weak and sinful people can be so intimately loved and known by a perfect God. But we are so wonderfully blessed to know that we live in the light of forgiveness won by the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. And because of that, we don’t need to put pressure on ourselves to be anyone other than who we are. He has placed his hand of blessing on our heads so He accepts us and will use us right where we are.
Take a few minutes today to thank God for who He is, and who you are because of Him. Thank Him for your unique talents and giftings and ask Him to help you be bold in using them exactly how He needs you to. Then take some time to ponder and embrace the blessing that He has created you to be you, and be confident that, regardless of how insignificant you might feel, He sees you, He knows you, and He loves you still.
